We start a new week here in the land of keep your distance. To help keep up the sanity (or insanity, whichever way you look at it), I’m doing a countdown of songs with titles appropriate to the situation. Just practice the title of today’s song if you have to go out!
#5: So Far Away - Dire Straits
And what do you know, we have appropriate lyrics in this one!
I’m tired of being in love and being all alone
When you’re so far away from me
I’m tired of making out on the telephone
’Cause you’re so far away from me
The opening song on the massive Dire Straits hit album Brothers in Arms, “So Far Away” was also the first single released from the album. Most people don’t even remember this was a single, thanks to the two big megahits that followed (“Money for Nothing” and “Walk of Life”).
Brothers in Arms is one of those albums I enjoy listening to: just sitting down and doing nothing but enjoying the music. With the wide variety of styles on the album (the beautiful “Your Latest Trick” has always been a favorite, with that jazzy saxophone from Michael Brecker highlighting the song), there’s no shortage of listening pleasure to be found.

so far away now means two arms lengths or, to use the original terms, keep yourself two cubits away!

I’m already 600 miles from you. You want me to move back another yard? Dang you’re picky.

Dire Straits is one of those groups that mainly went past me because they were not in the alternative world.

I really enjoyed them because they had a unique sound. As more and more bands began to sound identical to one another they still sounded like Dire Straits.

Not the song I thought it was. Recognize the group but not the song.
