This is a bronze artwork that I came across in Berlin during my visit there last year. It is called "Trains to Death - Trains to Freedom" and it depicts two sets of children. The larger group are about to board a train that will take them to a Nazi death camp, whereas the other two will board a KinderTransport train to safety in another country. Berlin contains many reminders of its troubled past - both in Nazi times and during its division between East and West when the Berlin Wall was in existence. I did not see anything that I found more moving than this.

That would have been incredibly moving. I read 'The Boy in Striped Pyjamas' recently and found that incredibly moving too.

It reminded me of Stephen Reich's piece "Different Trains", which was composed with a similar theme in mind and is every bit as poignant.
