Mad Scientist in Me Comes Out Once Again

Spile for tapping trees.
Canada

We thought we would try our hand at tapping trees this spring. I started out by turning a couple of spiles (wooden tubes for sap to run through) on the wood lathe. I'll include a video of that at the end of this post. We tapped a couple of maple trees on the property and have so far collected about seven liters of sap. We're going to boil that down on the woodstove while we heat our home. Hopefully, that will yield enough syrup to top a least a couple of stacks of pancakes. If this whole experiment is a grand success, we'll build an evaporator this summer and go whole hog next spring. Once the maple sap is done we'll also tap the birch trees. Their season immediately follows the maples so there is no reason we can't try both. Birch syrup apparently isn't that great on pancakes but works well in baking and as the Russians do, we can drink the stuff straight up without processing. Anyone else trying something new during their newfound spare time?
We are trying something new for us this year. We are learning to tap trees and collect their sap. In this video I turn two spiles. For anyone interested they...

That's a great idea to tap your own trees.

It could potentially dent the food budget next spring and I'm always looking to save where I can.

@JudyEv Expensive to the point that we never buy it. If we get syrup at the store it's the cheap straight sugary stuff because of the price. Looking forward to tasting some.

@koopharper I think maple syrup is expensive. Is that right?

Compared to most of the world we're doing alright but the latest crisis has not spared us. Hopefully, it won't ever reach the levels we've seen in other parts of the world.

That sounds wonderful, but too much work for me.

It isn't so much that it's a lot of work. I just have to get off my rear end and do it. I am unfortunately pretty boredom tolerant.

Did you give up? I have two active channels. The one focuses on my woodworking and the other focuses on our adventures living off in the bush.
