Did you play spin the bottle when you were a 'tween?

Horse Jr. and I went cycling the other day. He is still into Minecraft and Matchbox cars. But I remember having crushes on girls when I was 11-years-old. Only two years later, I would go to parties where we would play "spin the bottle." Boys and girls would sit in a circle, and spin a Coke bottle in the middle of the circle. When you spun it, you had to kiss the boy/girl of the opposite sex that it pointed at. Of course, those kisses were tiny pecks on the lips, but it was our introduction to kissing our crushes (and others). Does spin the bottle still exist? I don't know. In these politically correct times, would we have to kiss the person the bottle pointed at, even if it was our non-preferred gender? Did my (later to become) gay friends feel bummed out that they had to kiss people of their non-preferred gender at that time? Or was it all good? How did you learn to overcome the fears of such dangerous activities as holding hands, snuggling, or kissing people of your preferred gender? I'll attach a beautiful song by Jesse Winchester, another favorite recently departed folkie. For him, it was about the hugs. For me, it was about the hugs as well.
Jesse Winchester sings "Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding" and slays Elvis Costello and Neko Case

Enjoy the song. It's another classic by Jesse, one of my idols (along with John Prine) from late childhood. Can you remember the first time you dared hold hands with someone? Scary stuff!

@Courtlynn Dang! Spin the bottle wasn't so bad. But holding hands or having to kiss someone solo--that was some scary stuff for me.

I was never invited to a co-ed party at that age...just a school dance. I don't know if they play spin the bottle anymore.

@TheHorse Yes, in junior high I had a guy that had asked me to a ball game. Then we both were at the school dance; and he asked me to dance. It was awkward; but I was in heaven! lololol

I was afraid to play, because what if someone refused to kiss me, then I'd feel really bad.

I think we all felt that way. Except for the coolest of the "cool" kids. Heck, Maybe they did too.

I played a few games of spin the bottle when I was at that age. Our rules were that you had to go in the closet to kiss the boy. Hugs are great but not in the closet with some boy you don't particularly like that much.

Yikes! We called going into the closet "Post Office." I have no idea why. I was a bit shy for that game.

As an adult now, I wonder how closely the parents (upstairs) were monitoring our antics.

Yeah, I love this song. Did you see the tear streaming down Neko Case's cheek?

We call the game " truth or consequence " if the bottle points at you , you would be asked " truth or consequence" if you answer truth you would be asked a personal question like " who is your crush?" If you answer consequence, you would be made to do something like kiss somebody. Sorry but during my time gays do not or seldom opened up like now, our society was more conservative back then.

Glad you took the time to listen. He was one of the best "not that well-known except to true hipsters" folkies of the early 1970s. 3rd Down, 110 to Go (a reference to Canadian football) is a landmark album of short but beautiful songs. It came out in 1971 or so.
