I’m almost finished with the countdown of favorite songs by the great Creedence Clearwater Revival. As with yesterday’s song, here’s one that everyone can sing along with, even getting to mention a country singer in the process! Woo hoo! Sing along!
#2: Lookin’ Out My Back Door
A dinosaur Victrola
Listening to Buck Owens
Doo, doo, doo!
I actually got to hear this one as a child, probably because of the Dobro and mention of the country icon. And, when I say “hear it,” I mean the original: it may or may not surprise you to know that Buck Owens’ son, Buddy Alan, covered this song.
And my dear mother of blessed memory used to think this song was about a drug trip. As a 10-year-old with no concept of “acid trips,” I thought it was about a guy who was tired (“got to sit down, take a rest on the porch”) and fell asleep into a weird dream (“tambourines and elephants are playing in the band”). Spiro Agnew, among others, went along with my mom’s take on the song, and denounced the song (when he wasn’t busy avoiding income tax payments).
Well, let’s ask the guy who wrote it (not that anyone believes the songwriter: look at all the fundamentalists who’ve told Don Henley that “Hotel California” isn’t about what Henley says it’s about!!
). Fogerty intended it as a song for his toddler son, with inspiration coming from To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss.
With all of that behind us, enjoy what I consider to be CCR’s greatest “hit.”

This sorta could fit in your quarantine series as looking out our back doors is just about all we are allowed to do.
