It's now 2077 in Nepal

Before CV (coronavirus) we spent three weeks in Nepal and attended a Hindu wedding there. Before we left home, we were sometimes frustrated trying to get a straight answer to questions like ‘what date is the wedding’. We could never get an exact day or date but would be told something like ‘in three weeks’, or ‘in two days’. Once we were there we worked out that they have a different ‘calendar’ so it was tricky for them to convert days and dates to Western time. We were quite a novelty at the wedding, being Western and white. People were very hospitable and many wanted to be ‘friends’ on FB. It was very difficult to remember names other than those we associated with most. It’s bad enough remembering Tom, Dick and Harry but matching Bishnu, Prasant, Maniz to faces that you might have only met once is very difficult. However, it did mean Vince got dozens of good wishes on his birthday which was nice. It is now Nepali New Year (2077) and there seems to be lots of celebrations. I don’t even want to think about social distancing. I haven’t researched what countries have another calendar. Perhaps a myLotter knows. Photo of a typical street pole in Kathmandu.

Hahaha yes welcome to our world too. It drives me nuts when you ask well what date is the wedding erm september! What date don't know. It does wonders trying to book flights and book accomodation! Then the drop it on you right at the last minute oh in 7 days time! I hate indecisiveness!

@JudyEv Yes we have the same with our relatives but as they live in Australia it is not that helpful really plus if they leave it to the last minute which means that the flights are so much more expensive whereas if you book it a couple of months in advance it is cheaper.

We were really lucky and were given three weeks' notice. lol There was no way we were expecting the invitation but we really had no reason not to go so thought we might as well take advantage of the opportunity. But you're right. It made it difficult to book flights and accommodation.

@garymarsh6 I was joking about being lucky. As soon as we decided we'd go, we wanted to book the flight but then we couldn't get an exact date for the wedding. We didn't want to get there just the day before, or, heaven forbid, the day after!

@JudyEv right? How do you just not count the rising or setting of the sun. a day is mostly solar maintained

I guess a day is a day but maybe they miss out some days. They have to or else they just started the calendar a lot later than the 'Christian' one.

@JudyEv Yes, but where does the year 2077 come from?

Someone said Israel does. I think Chinese New Year is different too. This year it began on Jan 25 and ended on Feb 8; next year it involves Feb 12 but I don't know if that is the beginning or the end. .

@kareng Apparently their calendar, Bikram Sambat, uses lunar months. It was quote "established by the Indian emperor Vikramaditya and is recognized as the official calendar of Nepal. In addition to Bikram Samwat, the Gregorian calendar is also widely accepted in the Nepali community. Nepali Calendar is a solar calendar based on ancient Hindu traditions. The history of Nepali calendar has an intriguing story." So it seems there is a solar calendar and a lunar calendar so that doesn't quite make sense.

So we know what happened when we trace our calendar back 2020 years, but what happened in Nepal 2077 years ago? There's no way in hell that street pole is safe. Are electrocutions common in Nepal? lol

The year thing is way too complicated for me. A lot of the cables are for data apparently but it still looks very scary.

@mrki444 A lot of the wires are only carrying data signals. They're not all electrical cables.

@JudyEv They still don't care much for saftey about it. If this lines fall down during rain it can be really dangerous for everybody.

It's 1441 today in the Muslim calendar. The Chinese too have their lunar calendar but are now following Western standards.

I had no clue that some countries have a different calendar than we do. It's really odd for it to be 2020 here and 2077 in Nepal.

@JudyEv Not if it's 2077. Israel doesn't account for A.D. It's 6000 something from the beginning of time.

It has to be shorter surely for them to be up to 2077!! I don't understand it at all but then I've never studied it either.
