Who Mama Would Blame

I fondly remember my mother always blamed everything bad that happened even unforeseen natural things on the Soviets. You could not blame her though. She had to flee her homeland during WW II or they would shuffle her off to Siberia She was once there at the age of four because her father was in the Russian Army. She knew she would not survive that climate or anything else as an adult. So when there was a huge blizzard in NYC it was the Soviets blowing the snow over with a huge fan from way across the ocean. I got sick as a child them darn Soviets found a way to infect her child. She was a wonderful and intelligent person but she had such a hatred of how they had turned her life upside down. Heck, she would not even have been married to my father, who was the love of her life, because if the Soviets had their way his head would have rolled. This is true fact. So if it was still Soviet times and this was all happening and mom was still around it would all be their fault you could say anything you wanted mom would say she knew better. I don’t know what she would make of Trump but if she saw that he seemed to be trying to make something out of all this craziness I would not put it past her to send him a notice letting him know it’s the Soviets. Kind of frightening to think about what the U.S. and the world situation would be if Trump had come around in the time of the Soviet Union. That is one thing we can be glad did not happen. Just thinking about poor mom and how even when we lived in Riga, Latvia she was still suspicious of anyone and anything to do with Russia and Russians. She was sure Soviet times were coming back.

I have to say I knew/know people like your mother but I did not experience this first hand.

I'm sad that your Mom was so traumatized that it affected her adult life.

Both sets of my grandparents escaped Russia. I think your mother was right.

I remember a time in my childhood when it seemed everything was the Soviet's fault. Your mother lived with a very real fear.
