I Never had a Sidewalk

I’ve been thinking and wondering. Wherever I lived, the streets never had a sidewalk. Growing up, there was one sidewalk across the street . That’s where I roller skated and rode my bicycle. I never stepped on a crack for fear of breaking my mother’s back. (Silly old wife tale) What I have had are roads coming up to the lawns. ~Photo of my Connecticut rock garden ~ Do you have sidewalks? I’m curious.

In my area, there were sidewalks. I skated, skateboarded, and rode my bike on them too . . . and on my ventures I can't say there were any local areas without sidewalks. However in our current area (which may be older than my parents' area) there are a few houses that do not have sidewalks.

@DianneN I was a tomboy and I liked to be mobile - so yes, I skateboarded! I remember going off on my own to venture various neighborhoods . . . I may have been as young as 6 doing that. But that was such a different time . . . I wouldn't dare let my kids do that here!

I do remember sidewalks in the city I grew up in having sidewalks, but there were none in the burbs. I always wished I had one. So you skateboarded, too?

I don't have sidewalks, but my house is by the side of the road, so I could always go outside to ride my bike.

Yes, we have to ride our bikes in the road here, too, unless we find biking trails.

Love the photo that you are using for this post. We had one house with no sidewalk but the others all had a sidewalk.

Thanks so much! Doodles and Kuma, the kitties, loved that garden area and are now at rest in their favorite place. I always loved sidewalks.

It's massively unusual for roads in the UK in residential areas not to have footpaths separating the road from houses/gardens. I've never lived anywhere that hasn't.

@DianneN Probably just as well. Most people drive like lunatics over here. A buffer zone is definitely needed.

When I grew up in the Philippines , I didn't walk in a sidewalk as we didn't have it. Here in Germany, there are sidewalks everywhere where I can safely walk. There are even bicycle pathways.

@thelme55 I live in a small city in Florida. If I walked to our downtown, it would take about 25 minutes or a 5 minute car ride. There are sidewalks there and in neighboring areas. We have water instead of forests. Up north it’s a completely different story.

That’s awesome! Do you live in a city? Here, most of the cities have sidewalks and bicycle paths, but further away there are none in the suburbs.

@DianneN Yes, I live in a city but the city center is still 12 minutes walk for me. We have a forest nearby as well. There are also sidewalks in the suburbs here.

I've lived in ten different streets in six different towns. Nine streets had sidewalks. I don't see any rocks in your garden. Here a garden like the one in the photo would be called 'rock garden'.

Yes, we have sidewalk at home. Sidewalk is necessary if the house is far from the national road. It is also good for jogging especially this time.

@DianneN All of our suburbs are basically planned out developments many on grid patterns. Of course if you go deep up into Bel Air and residentials up in the hills and mountains, sidewalks disappear but that's because the wealthy seek privacy and you can't have sidewalks along twisting mountain streets like Mulholland.

We had sidewalks when we lived in Cleveland and the Cleveland suburbs; but once we moved out to a more "countrified" area, there were no sidewalks.
