Fern Holler

We live on a wooded five acre track in the hills of Tennessee. We had our wedding reception here before the house was completed. It's a place we love and we have continued to work on it on a regular basis since that wedding in 2004. It was and is a labor of love, in more ways than one.
About a half an acre was cleared to build the house and the rest remained wooded, mostly in its natural state. But the previous owner had cut some timber on the land and that, with the construction of the house, left downed limbs and trees in the wooded areas. A little unsightly. So from time to time we work on different areas of the property. We won't be finished until we leave here.
Our project during the pandemic is a spot beside the driveway, coming up the hill to our house. There's a little stream there that sometimes overflows it's bank and floods the area.
In the hot summer months, the stream completely dries up. In the springtime the area really comes alive. It's covered with ferns and may apples and many wildflowers.
Last spring I started working on this area but did not get much accomplished. Truthfully, I probably will never be done with it. This spring my husband joined in the effort and we've been working on it for weeks now. Just a little each day. We're just cleaning it up, clearing out a bit, and transferring some of our plants from the top of the hill.
We call the place Fern Holler. That's the Tennessee hills way of saying Hollow.

Being from the South, I've been to a few hollers in my time! Glad you and your husband are able to get out and enjoy the outdoors and get a little accomplished each day.

@pjmurphy I get asked a lot about what a holler is from non-Southern people. I just tell them it is a valley that you yell at! Haha

@moffittjc I love that definition: A valley that you yell at. But I don't yell at my holler. It's very peaceful.

It looks like it could be a spot here on our property.
