Giving and trading plants

Do you and your neighbors or friends exchange plants for your gardens? When I was growing up, my father never had to buy seeds, and neither did his friends. Each one saved certain seeds and when it came time to plant they would exchange. My little area of ground seems to pick up lots of seeds that have fallen or been blown. I have two loquat trees (one grew as a seedling from the other, so their fruits are different) and now I have a few tree babies. I have a friend who just bought a house and he suggested he would like one of them. I also potted a random palm tree last year in hopes I could use it for shade, but now the other trees are giving shade. So I asked him if he would like a palm tree and a loquat seedling. He is going to locate places to plant them, and then come and get them. It's nice to share plants.

Exchanging saplings or seeds among neighbours and friends is common practice all over.

I bought 2 potted strawberries that are fruitful. Fortunately I was able to propagate that later on I gave away to friends and relatives when they requested. Strawberry is a novelty in this tropical country.

@petatonicsca from what I had read, strawberry plants has a life span of 5 years only. That is why I am always in wait for the "runners" that bear baby plants. That is the only way to propagate strawberry. I tried the seeds but nothing sprouted.

@Alexandoy Yes, mine were in containers so didn't get the runners.

I had several pots of wild strawberries that grow and bear tiny fruits nearly all year. Unfortunately they gave out after about five or six years, but they were amazingly hardy for strawberry plants.

My mother always reckoned that half of the gardens in her home town had plants from her garden. She was always giving away bits and pieces. She also received a lot too from others. It's nice to be able to share with others.

We have Black Rose succulents that were blessed by Buddhist monks... We haven't taken care of them that closely and they are still alive... We gave a few to my cousins and they were still growing out of the soil...Those monks did a good job...

I never heard of a Black Rose succulent. I assume it's not a rose. What is it like?

It's also practical if you used to exchange some of you seeds or plants to your neighbor especially for the plants or seeds that your neighbor don't have and suggest to have them exchanged the the plants or seeds you don't have as well, same with my neighbor here. Well, that kind of funny things as well.

Interestingly enough, my exactly next door neighbors don't have a yard because our houses are very small and they both chose to concrete over the dirt part. But I exchange with friends.

@petatonicsca yeah that's great too. I hope I've got the same thing as well from my friends.

I gave a friend some seeds yesterday, and she gave me a sedum plant. Once our stuff starts growing, we'll exchange seedlings too. I'm ready for growing season!

I do think that we should all be generously trading plants, especially heirloom seeds and plant varieties. Here in our community, you can easily ask a neighbor for a plant or a fruit.

Yes, we do that too. I have two loquat trees and a persimmon tree (which got trimmed back so no fruit this year) and everyone knows who brought the big bag of loquats to share at work. Other people share vegetables. My yard is too shady for vegetables, though I tried for a while.
