Stay home, Stay in Tokyo, Save lives: Golden Week 2020

Japan
April 29, 2020 2:15am CST
Every evening at 6:45 the mayor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, gives an update on corona virus subjects. She tells number of people, trend of data, and talks about government discussion, policies and requests. Golden Week (April 29-May 5) is a time during which several holidays fall together, so many companies have that time off and people go to the country to visit their relatives. Not this year. Nobody should be going from Tokyo (a hot spot) to the country to visit elderly parents (high risk) and into communities that are still "clean". So Tokyo made up a slogan. The funny thing is that the slogan is in English. It is in the title. "Stay home, Stay in Tokyo, Save lives." At the end of her talk every night, the mayor says "Stay home, stay in Tokyo, save lives" and then repeats it in Japanese. She has also re-named Golden Week to "Stay Home Week" and has engaged a number of famous athletes, actors, musicians, artists and others to make short and entertaining videos that people can enjoy watching at home. She also requested people to send in themes that can be used in a card game "Karuta" which is traditionally played at home during New Year, with snippets of poem that you have to grab before anybody else in your family gets to it. People made statements about how to stay safe, such as "Observe cough etiquette". It's a very Japanese approach to persuade people to stay home. What do you think of this approach?

I don't watch the news enough lately so I don't know if our mayor updates every night or not.

Your Mayor sounds very concerned about her citizens. We get an update every evening too and I'm sure it has helped to keep people more or less following the guide lines.

@petatonicsca I understand why she is saying that. We have to do what our govts tell us to do because we need to stay safe and not go out unless we have to. When we go out wear a mask and social distance ourselves.
