The Leader's name is Brooks. His trial comes off to-morrow at Garnett, and as he has pleaded guilty, there is no doubt but that he will serve a few years at least. This comes from a Kansas newspaper in the late 1800's. I'll share a link below, but since the article in question may be hard to find, I'll summarize it. It seems as if there was a gang of horse thieves in the area of Kansas and into Missouri. They had spent the better part of a few years stealing horses and keeping them away at a stable. They may have never been caught had it not been for a man who squealed. He Squealed, and as a natural consequence, some trouble followed is the headline of the article. The man in question had been treated "rather shabbily" by his comrades, and in revenge, had decided to squeal. I do think the man would have done better had he stopped to think things through, don't you? He ended up in the penitentiary Would you have given up information on your partners in crime?

First of all, I wouldn't have been involved in crime; but if I were, I might squeal if they treated me badly...or not because it would be dangerous for me if they ever got out.

Ah, but back then you would have been thrown in the slammer right along with them.

@Bensen32 Yeah. The "Squealer" was "an old man" of 61 odd years. I'm betting that he wasn't pulling his weight or something, and the others were complaining.
