Pot Lids

Before everything we brought was stored and sold in plastic , many products would have been sold in ceramic jars. These ceramic jars often had lovely pictures and advertising images on their lids. Now these lids have become very collectable because products are not sold like this anymore.
Some of the products contained in these pots are very interesting (and gruesome) in themselves, for example Bear Grease which was used for hair and beauty products. Other products sold in pots include toothpaste and food products like fish paste.
Here is a book on a subject on what I call `proper antiques' because Pot Lids are just that, proper antiques. This book teaches the reader what to look for when starting a collection of pot lids including photos of genuine pot lids , information on the factories that made them and it also includes values.

I think the emphasis is on the lids, but even the jars are not like jars as we know them. The jars were old pottery jars.

I wanted to buy books on antiques and collectables for my new bookcase. So I had a look at my local auction and I noticed that they had a few large boxes full of old books for sale. I got carried away and brought about four boxes full of books. When I got them all home I did not have room for them all. The following month I went back to the auction and brought another bookcase. Now I am sorting out what ones I want to keep because I would soon like to go and buy some more.

From an era when care and design was found even in the most mundane objects.

This is a very true point, although most of the pots were mass produced they were made to last and the designs were wonderful.

It is a bit different from the usual collecting subjects. But I don't think pot lid collecting is as popular now as it was in the past.

I actually think sometimes that we should try to avoid plastic and use those ceramic pots which you also highlighted

That would not be a bad thing because these days we could keep the ceramic pots and have them refilled with the original product and just keep re-using them .

It is a good way that the publishers have designed the cover of this book. It makes people look at it more than once and gets them interested in the book.
