1915 - Babe Ruth hit his first major league home run.
1954 - Roger Bannister becomes the first person to run a mile in less than 4 minutes.
1961 - George Clooney was born. He is an American actor, director, producer and filmmaker. He has won 3 Golden Globes and 2 Academy Awards. He first gained recognition as Dr. Doug Ross in the TV series ER from 1994-1999. Some of his movies: Ocean's Eleven trilogy, Michael Clayton, Up in the Air and the Descendants. He was included in Time's annual Time 100 as one of the "Most Influential People in the World".
1992 - Marlene Dietrich passed away. She was born in 1901 and was a German-American actress and singer. She was active from 1919-1984. In the 1920s she performed on stage and in silent films. Dietrich was one of the highest paid actresses in her era. She occasionally still made a film after World War II; but spent the 1950s - 1970s touring the world as a live-show performer. In 1999 the American Film Institute named her the 9th greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema.
