I am, in fact, a nerd

Most of you have been chatting with me here for years and already know this. If you didn't, or if we haven't been chatting for long, let me introduce myself. Hi, my name is Amber and I am a nerd. Not just any kind of a nerd, however, but a random history nerd. I get something in my mind and I will research and research until either I'm exhausted, or I've exhausted the subject. Here recently that has been metal detecting. I came across this channel (I'll post the link below) last night and have been watching the videos that the guy provides. He does metal detecting, gold panning etc etc. I've been focusing more on his metal detecting videos at the moment, but I did watch one of him gold panning in the NC Mountainous regions. Here's the link to the man's channel if you want to check it out. He finds some really cool stuff, including traces of an old road used for carting materials from a nearby mine. Yes, that squeal you just heard is, in fact, me. Did you already suspect that I was a history nerd or is this news to you? Have you ever gone metal detecting?
Metal detecting, treasure, history, coins, river treasure, adventure, nature, animals and MOAR! That is what my channel is about. I enjoy caving, SCUBA divin...

Welcome to the nerd club. I have done both gold panning and metal detecting..never got anything from either..although it is exciting thinking it might be.

I think I'd feel bummed after all the work gold panning requires.

I was just wondering if there were any places that rented metal detectors, or had a metal detecting experience. Surely there is.

@Tina30219 they can be really expensive, but if he knew what to look for, he could probably make the money back just buy digging.

My husband does have a metal detector. He rarely uses it.

I bet, if he put his mind to it, he could earn some good money. There are plenty of enthusiasts that would pay good money for some of the things unearthed while metal detecting. I sent a link to one of this guys videos to my ex boyfriend. He is a "picker" (like the show American Pickers). He told me that he was shouting at the man in the video, telling him to go back and pick up this or that. He claims there's a lot of value in the most innocuous of things.

@paigea You'll have to forgive my enthusiasm. I know I would have a ton of fun doing it.

Yes, I know that you're a history nerd. Yes, I've been metal detecting. My husband would like to try gold panning. As far as research goes, if someone says they can't find something on the internet about X, I will spend hours looking until I find something about that subject. I'm relentless.

@LindaOHio Yes, it is. As long as it is behaving. Today I've had trouble with one of the music services I listen to through my speaker.

@Kathze I don't know a lot about that type of thing either. People here pan gold in streams.

I think everyone has a different definition. Not just of nerd, but of the word geek as well. To me nerdy is more about being so enthusiastic about something that they find joy in surrounding themselves with it

I can imagine. I know I spout out a lot of random facts I learn. My friends and family endure it, but I know they don't care as much.

I'm like you about history, reading everything I can find which includes different points of view. The funny thing is, I hated history when I was in school.

I absolutely, positively hated it myself! If only my history teachers could see me now... To be honest, I'm not sure if I've ever had a history teacher that seem thrilled to teach the subject. The things we learned in the books are nowhere near what I research today. if you like colonial type history, I'd recommend the youtube channel I've been watching which is AquaChigger. I really like him because it's almost living history. He finds things in the ground, he sometimes explores old (1800's-1900's) homesteads...

@ScribbledAdNauseum In high school I mainly had one teacher. She was not a personable person at all and she always seemed like she was mad. Thank you for the recommendation. I will definitely check it out.

Now that would be fun I think. I bet lots of stuff get lost at sea and end up buried under the sand.

I don't but I've seen people do it. When we lived near the beach we found all sorts of stuff in the sand without a metal detector. It's an interesting subject..

Yeah, all sorts of things get washed up form the ocean. There's no telling what was lost in the rough seas on the way to America all those many years ago..

Very interesting. I have not done metal detecting. Am just wondering if the equipment is affordable. You may be a nerd but you are a very nice woman I never encountered you say offensive words to.anyone.

No, the equipment can be upwards of $1000 USD. Well, thank you. Though admittedly I have lost my temper here before. I always feel bad and apologize.
