The fig grows on an Asian species of flowering tree which is in the mulberry family. The fig tree is also grown as an ornamental. The fig was one of the first plants cultivated by humans (9400-9200 B.C.). In 1769 Spanish missionaries brought the first figs to California. Figs can be eaten fresh or dried; and can be used in jam-making. You will also recognize their use in Fig Newtons. Raw figs are a good source of fiber; and dried figs are also a good source of fiber and manganese. In addition to the dates that I recently wrote about, dried figs were also a staple in our household around the holidays. Have you ever eaten a fig? Photo Credit: Pixabay (fresh figs)

I enjoy figs in salads but I personally have never cooked with them.

I love figs. But lately they are too expensive for me to buy.

I love fresh figs! But funny I don't like Fig Newtons. I didn't grow up on figs - still my parents don't care for them. I buy them up when they're in season . . . so sad when they are gone!

Fig jam makes a great spread on bread, preferably with cream on top.
