Twenty or more years ago, I met a gentleman called Genco. He told me he was once a volunteer tour guide in Baguio City, the Philippines' summer capital. One day, an elderly couple passed by the basketball court where he and his friends play and asked for directions. Genco not just gave them directions but accompanied them. The couple gave thanks. Genco volunteered to accompany them the following day, so they will not get lost. At the end of the couple's trip, they tried to give Genco payment for his tour guide services. He refused saying it was his greatest pleasure to show them his city. The couple then told him that they will send them an invite to Germany, to show him their country, and wish he would come. Okay, he said in jest, thinking it was just a whimsical gesture.
But the invitation arrived, complete with documents, and Genco found himself afraid of the journey. In Germany, he was awed by the grandeur of the couple's home estate. Feeling indebted for all the food and lodging and the expenses of the trip, Genco spun to work, cooking, cleaning, gardening, and literally attending to all the couple's needs. He was then surprised when the couple said that they enrolled him in school. So he went, wondering when he would get back to his Baguio but wary too that the couple would be left alone without him caring. So he stayed and studied. Before long, he was well versed in the arts and the humanities.
Time did pass by and the elderly grew increasingly old. But before they went, they told Genco how grateful they were they found him. He was a son to them. At life's end, they bequeathed Genco all they owned.
Here's another story like Genco's.
In an episode of the HGTV show "Celebrity IOU," Michael Buble said the person he wanted to give back to the most was Minette, who took good care of his grandfather in Vancouver.

Kindness can be its own reward, but it is also nice when people recognize how you care for them.

The German couple were blessings, according to Genco.
Yup, the kindness and the selflessness. Caring is loving.
