Shy Wolf, the American Indian medicine man of the Sioux tribe, was dying, and he asked one of his fellow braves to brave a run over to a neighbouring tribe, that the medicine man there, might come to help him get over this condition, which was now debilitating him.
Shy Wolf had no idea what it was, himself.
The brave run all day and all night, and the other medicine man knew at once what the problem was. It was smallpox, which the white invaders had dropped onto the pristine Indian environment, for them to catch from them.
He sent back a message,
"This is a white man's disease, but die bravely, as an Indian should always do, just the same."
Tell him,
"Do not be afraid to die. It will free your mind of painful thoughts."
Shy Wolf was not shy to die, after a word of encouragement, came from his friend.
In the next life, he will surely be called, "Brave Wolf."
