"The Winner Is....ME!"

If Chuck Berry was the father of rock and roll, Little Richard was the queen mother. No, that's not meant as an insult. Quite the opposite! Richard Wayne Penniman, who passed away today (5/9) of bone cancer at the age of 87, was without question the first flamboyant performer in music. He was wild and crazy, and he flaunted it. Without Little Richard's unabashed showmanship we would probably never had the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, David Bowie, Elton John, Prince, Freddie Mercury, or most of the glam rockers. He showed, from the advent of rock and roll (actually, before it, as he was performing in the early 50s), that the bigger the show the better. One of the funniest things I remember about Little Richard was the night he and David Johansen, as Buster Poindexter, presented the "Best New Artist" Grammy. When it came time to announce the award's recipient, Little Richard said, "And the best new artist is.....ME." After a standing ovation, he went to open the envelope and said, "And the winner is...still me!" Jody Watley actually won the award, but that was anticlimactic after Little Richard's fabulous stunt. He did get a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, in 1993. He was also part of the inaugural induction class into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. As he said in that hilarious moment on the Grammys, "I am the architect of rock and roll!" One last WOOOOOOOO!!!!! for the great Little Richard. This might make you laugh until you cry:
Nominated: Breakfast Club Cutting Crew Terence Trent D'Arby Swing Out Sister Jody Watley (winner)

Haha I was actually thinking about that. I am going people going to be confused. they were 1 2 , they were the firsts. Neither was better but both were great. The rock n roll inventors are deceased and why its such a big deal. When you put it like that I am pretty sad about it but, they so good they left us happy. How neat is that?

They were different in styles. Chuck Berry was flamboyant in his own way, but not to the extent of Little Richard. We needed them both to have rock and roll, that's for certain!!!

@FourWalls I bet I can actually see a rivalry there. How we just are and to me if being honest Chuck Berry more of the true musician just gifted in how he could play and still something that haunts me is like how scientists say every glass of water has a drop that was drunken by a dinosaur. Every chord you ever hear from a modern rock musician has a chuck berry chord in some way. That is crazy and Little Richard had some chops and a lot more just fun personality. They would have been a great combo, but they were great as was because kept the music growing.

I kind of see what you mean now. He was quite the cut up funny guy. When we saw him in Vegas he said "You know I am 75 years old and I can't complain about growing older because it's still better then the alternative " Loved that guy.

Little Richard was definitely an interesting entertainer! I had heard that he had passed away, but I didn't realize it was from bone cancer. I hope he didn't suffer too much in the end. His music and his style definitely influenced many artists after him.

Jerry Lee was basically a contemporary who would have happened anyway. Little Richard was influenced by Billy Wright who had the hair and makeup thing going. People may be shocked since minstrel shows are now looked down upon but young Richard paid his dues there. So even Little Richard copied everything from someone else and put his own twist on it.
