Masks are like gold!

Japan

It's impossible to find masks in Japan right now (in local stores anyway). Japanese people have always worn masks during cold and flu season as well as for pollen allergies so it's kind of strange not to be able to buy any except online. (I'm sure people are doing that because I see lots of very clean new disposable masks on people.) I ordered one, which cost me about $15 USD, on April 23, and it arrived yesterday on May 14. It's nice. Anyway, this morning I knocked on my neighbor's door to ask if it was ok for the student who is helping me clean up the weedy mess and trees between me and them (the area belonging to me is about 30 cm or one foot wide, all along the house) if he could come on their porch to trim the trees from there. She said, "Of course! By the way, do you need a cotton mask?" I said yes, and she said, "My mother made us a lot of them." She gave me two. They are just as nice (maybe nicer) than the ones I got online. They are adjustable and you can put a nose-wire in or not. I felt like she had handed me gold. Seriously, masks are precious right now. And we need several because of having to wash after wearing and waiting for them to dry. My own cut-from-old-tshirts ones feel comfortable but look very homemade "I needed this so I threw it together." My new ones from the neighbor look great, feel great and fit perfectly! So I am very thankful. What are you thankful for today?

We experienced that before my wife's sister gave us 20 face masks. We wash the face mask after using so we can save on it.

@petatonicsca there are only 3 of us in the house so that's a lot of face masks. We gave some to the neighbors.

Indeed! Masks are gold for now. But it's also worth noting how kind your neighbors are. May GOD bless them more.

My neighbors are the only people in my "bubble" that I actually talk to face to face every day. The young ones on one side of my house are very friendly (and gave me the masks). The older ones (on the other side) gave me some strawberries they grew on their little rental garden. I haven't given either side anything so now I think I should think of something.

The only reason I have a mask is because my nurse friend sent me one. My dad's wife made one out of a bandana and rubber bands. It really is difficult to find them. And some, you can tell, don't look that they can keep a single germ away.

Well, the thing is if you sneeze or cough into them they will keep your germs away from other people.

That's a really kind thought and yes, when you need something in particular, it's a great bonus to be offered one - or two.

@petatonicsca It's a shame more cultures don't cultivate such kindness.

I am always amazed by Japanese people's kindness. That is how they are brought up.

I found hand sanitizer, hand wipes (some have gone dry) and a bunch of masks in my earthquake kit (also known as a bug-out bag). Pretty much have already gone through the masks.

I have been making them, folded handkerchief and old T-shirt styles. These ones I just received are miles better than anything I could make.
