Eating dinner "with" the grandkids

For the past few weeks, I have been doing Facetime once a week with grandkids. I feel like I know them better now than when I was visiting in person, because that only happened about once every six weeks. The two-year-old turned from a toddler into a little girl during this past week-- her face looks so grown up now, and she is talking a lot and making sense instead of babbling only. Pretty cool.
Anyway, today I timed my call for 5:30 so I could "virtually babysit" while my daughter made dinner. It didn't work so well because they were actually helping her get dinner, but when everyone sat down to eat, she put the phone on a stand on the table. I said, "Oh, let's eat together." I warmed up my stew (that I made yesterday) and we talked as we ate. It was fun!
Also the four-year-old has learned to use chopsticks fairly neatly. I'm impressed. She ate her whole dinner (rice, broccoli, cauliflower, tuna salad) with chopsticks.
It's fun to have virtual dinner together! How are you staying close to family this week? (I think I asked the same question a couple weeks ago... sorry!)

@petatonicsca Goodness, you would have felt really isolated at the time. I guess phone calls were expensive then too.

I certainly remember when I first came to Japan in 1981 and six months in there was a mail strike in Canada!

That's a cool way to have them with you while eating even if it's just virtually.

Yes, I think it is something I should have thought of a long time ago, but had no energy to do. I assumed I had to take the long train ride to their house, spend time there, and long train ride back. Now I can "visit" easily.

I like the title although I was a bit disappointed upon reading what kind of eating you did. That 4-year old is good to eat the vegetables.

@petatonicsca kids here do not like vegetables so I am amazed that a toddler liked broccoli and cauliflower.

What kind of eating did you want us to do? (The four-year-old loves vegetables and all kinds of food. The 2-year-old is a picky eater.)

It was a lot less awkward than I expected, and actually felt like we were eating together.

Yes, it was fun, and while their mom was cooking I read a couple books to them. Then they had to go help her.
