Thanks to John Roberts, who merely suggested a countdown of songs related to jail or prison (due to the lockdown), I’m counting down my favorites that have “free” (or a variation) in the title. The #1 song will surprise you....and make you shrug because you’ve never heard of it. Meanwhile, you may or may not have heard of this song...but you probably know the artist, given how much I use him. #6: Freedom for the Stallion - Boz Scaggs Back when Allen Toussaint passed away I did a countdown of my favorite songs that he had written. This was on the list. It’s one of his oft-covered tunes from the early-mid 70s, given the social consciousness of the lyrics. I first heard the song by Three Dog Night, on their Seven Separate Fools album. Then there was the Hues Corporation (of “Rock the Boat” fame), Tony Orlando & Dawn, and Lee Dorsey (whose biggest hit, “Workin’ in a Coal Mine,” was also written by Toussaint). Heck, even the Oak Ridge Boys later recorded it, as did Elvis Costello. But you know me. If you give me an option, I’m going with the Boz man every time. (Although I will say the Tony Orlando & Dawn version is surprisingly good.) So enjoy one of Toussaint’s great compositions by one of my favorite voices.
