I now own a piece of someone else's history

Call me sentimental.
I believe that every piece of crochet, knitting, cross stitch or any kind of work that involves a needle.. I believe it tells it's own story. I think this afghan tells a happy story, at least as far as when it was crocheted.
it's beautiful and bright. Maybe not everyone's favorite colors or pattern, but I love it.
It's now in the washing machine. Carefully laid in so that it would brush against the agitators as little as possible. Put on delicate and using only a bit of vinegar and some fabric softener.
Color me sentimental, but this little piece of crochet makes me happy. Makes me think of my mom...

I do not know what happened to the afghan's that my mother crocheted. When she passed, so many of my family members came in and took things, and I was already in a vulnerable state from the recent separation with my ex husband..
So seeing this, even though my mom didn't make it, brings me closer to her.

@CarolDM Yes, it is a period in my life that I am glad is over. It took me awhile to realize that I could not take everything that was my mother's, nor would have it been healthy if I did. I have a few of her precious moments things, a few of the dolls she made, and pictures of her from her youth. Things I treasure.

That appears to be a great work
My mother and grandmother were also great at doing this.

My grandmother's best friend taught my mom and aunt when they were young. My aunt didn't take to it as much as my mom, who ended up making a sort of career out of it.

@amitkokiladitya I do too. I wonder if some of the colors are even available now. There is a brown used in the afghan that I have not seen when looking for yarn myself.

I thought the same thing, so it must be the pattern. I think the granny squares themselves are a common pattern.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Growing up we had some blankets and other items our elderly next door neighbor made . . . I am thinking this reminds me of those. Hmmm, I wonder what ultimately happened with them. Yours gets a new life with lots of love!

@much2say This came from Arizona. I'm not sure where it was before that, or if it was anywhere before that. The seller was a woman by the name of Jennifer, but I'm not certain that she was the one that made it. It could be that the same elderly neighbor that made you all some blankets, made these. Or it could have been a popular pattern at the time, I do not know.
Yes, lots of love and care. I've seen a few blankets that I might get as well, but I will wait. If they are still there in the coming months, I'll buy them. One I saw had a sunflower type of pattern on it and would be perfect for a blanket and sunflower loving friend's birthday.

I am happy as well. I want to buy a few more as well. I've been "feeling" it out on ebay to find ones that I believe are being sold by the actual family and not having been bought at estate sales or goodwill's. It might seem silly, but I think that those who are selling the items lovingly made by themselves or their family, those people need the money. Maybe not, but I like to think they do and that I've helped them a bit.
Sentimental, I know.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I don't think it is sentimental, I think that it is a love based way of living and is a win win way of choosing that ends up with every one feeling better about the transaction.

It's one of a kind unfortunately, but I think it's an easy pattern to follow. It's been a long time since I've attempted crochet, but I believe this is just double crochet.

That blanket makes me think of myself. There was once a time when I decided to take up crocheting. I made hats and blankets. That was about 30 years ago.

I've tried my hand at crocheting and loom knitting, but I could never get the tension right!
I just have to admire the craftiness of others.

@cmoneyspinner I never tried traditional knitting. Loom knitting was easy, but I kept forgetting stitches.

@ScribbledAdNauseum - For me crocheting was much easier than knitting.

Yes, I don't think my picture does a good job of showing it, but there is a chain of single crochet around each set of extra large granny squares. Someone spent hours lovingly making this. I would honestly love pillows made of the same pattern.

It was something I bought from ebay. You can usually find these things at goodwill as well, but I don't believe ours have opened back up yet.

@MarymargII Yes. It makes me think of the afghan's thrown on the back of my childhood couches. Different colors, but similar pattern. It also make me sentimental for a time when people did not just go out and buy new comforters, they made their own.
I have a pacman quilt my mother made as well. Oh it's damaged, but I keep it because it was my brother's baby blanket.

I was taking a gamble on it as the woman had never sold anything before. I got it from ebay, I actually put
it on my "watchlist" and she offered me less than what her asking price was, so I took it. I honestly got the
impression that maybe this was an item that had belonged to her mother. I do not know that for certain.

@cherriefic I agree. It has been colder here the past few days as we've had rain. Today it is supposed to rain a lot more than the previous days. It's 46 degrees farenheit now, or 7 degrees celsius.

Yes the granny squares are atleast two or three sizes bigger than what I am used to seeing. It is one of the things that attracted me to the blanket.

@LindaOHio Yes, I hope she'll appreciate it as much as I already do. Of course, that is something that won't be thought about for many years now (hopefully!). Also, you never know what the future may bring. I am getting older, but not so old that I couldn't have children if the situation came.
