I have always been interested in old things , and funnily enough, as I get older I seem to have developed and interest in old toys. This book gives the reader information on old and antique metal toys like cars, boats trains etc. It also has some lovely photos and information on automata. Automata is the name given to things like clockwork toys , dancing figures etc. These toys were made before the time when children`s toys required batteries to make them work. They just had to be wound up with a key and off they went. Of course this was okay until the key got lost.

That's interesting. My toys when I was a kid were all made of plastic or fabric.

I think most toy makers stopped using metal sometime around the 1950s or 1960s, a long time before you were born.

They were built to last and that is why they are still in working order today. These toys were made from metal which is not easily broken.

They were fun and easy to use, unless you overwound them.

It is a shame they cannot be made these days , but I don`t think some of them would meet modern health and safety requirements.
