1937 - The Golden Gate Bridge in California is opened to pedestrian traffic.
1962 - The Centralia mine fire is ignited in the town landfill above a coal mine. It continues to burn to this day.
1915 - Herman Wouk was born. He is an American author best known for his 1951 book The Caine Mutiny which won him a Pulitzer Prize. Two of his other works are The Winds of War and War and Remembrance. He passed away in 2019.
1936 - Louis Gossett Jr. was born. He is best known for his role as Fiddler in the 1977 TV miniseries Roots for which he won an Emmy and his role as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in the 1982 movie An Officer and a Gentleman for which he won an Academy Award.

I've always wanted to walk/jog across the Golden Gate Bridge, but I've never had the time or chance to do so. I've driven across it several times before though, so that will have to do for now.
