Have you heard about those giant wasps that are "invading" the US?

I read something about these big wasps that have been showing up in various places in the US. The were actually calling them hornets, but I don't now what the difference is. I Googled some pictures, and they looked like big yellow jackets to me. Apparently their sting is powerful enough to kill a human IF enough of them swarm you.
I had one in my house the other day. He (or she) about 1 1/2" long! I shooed the critter outside and then tracked it to a railing on the way down from my apartment where a nest was being built.
I called management and told them about the next. They suggested I spray the next with bug spray. I realized all I had was ant killer, and the last thing I wanted to do was make a bunch of giant wasps mad at me.
I called management back and asked if they had any dedicated bee and wasp spray. "Domingo came by later in the day and we saturated the nest with his more powerful stuff. It worked. The dying wasps back out and fell to the ground beneath the nest.
The nest is kind of pretty, but I didn't want It to get bigger and bigger and then accidentally bump into it while carrying groceries or my bike up. I hope I don't get victimized by the Bug Gods or Bug Karma. I'm usually nice to insects.
Hove you heard anything about these wee critters?

According to the internet, the main difference between wasps and hornets are size and colour. So they basically do the same thing (build nests and eat other insects), but I suppose hornets eat bigger insects.
Maybe hornets eats wasps? I've seen wasps eat bees.

@TheHorse Hornets are white and black and wasps yellow and black the internet says.
I don't think we've got hornets here, at least I've never seen any white and black ones. We've got bees, bumblebees and wasps and different sort of stining and biting flies, but no hornets.

The ones by my stairs never attacked me. I did get stung by a regular yellow jacket who really wanted my Taco Bell burrito. This was at the horse stables. But it was a "glancing blow," so it only hurt for a few minutes before advancing to the itchy stage.

Judging from the small size of that nest, I would say they are more likely common paper wasps than the ferocious murder hornets. But I'm not a scientist or whatever, so I don't really know for sure.

Yes, I have heard about the murder hornets. They are killing the honeybees from what I understand. A bad situation. I'm glad you didn't get stung.
