COVID debt/finances update

COVID adulting - debt update I thought it would be kind of cool to post once per month on here or so to keep me on track with my financial goals. Goals for me are to pay off my current debt, and then work on building a down payment on a house. Unfortuantely, life, and shopping gets in the way. But since I have been "homebound" the last couple of months with COVID, and then the riots here in Minneapolis, but still working (perhaps working more now than I was before), it is a perfect time for me to get financially responsible. I currently rent, for pretty cheap, and have minimal bills. Previous to COVID, I was a pack a day smoker, enjoyed gambling at the nearby casino, and spent a ton of money on trips every-other-month - those flights, hotels, rentals, etc DEFINITELY add up. I miss all those experiences but might as well use this time to better my financial status.. Current Debt - 6/9/20: $14,977 Credit Card Debt: $0 Student Loan: $3540 Auto Loan: $11,437 Progress I have made this month: -Paid $1,800 Smile Direct Club for teeth aligners -Paid $310 Student Loan -Paid $0 extra to car loan BUT I have a refinancing in the works with my credit union. My original car loan is from the dealership, a 5.5% APR which was the best they could do for me. Now I am finishing up a deal with my credit union that will give me the same term length, but 4.25%, and no payments for 100 days (I opted for two months payment-free, but I will likely be paying it off anyway to get a head start). -No extra money put into savings at this point. I have no specific goals for this month - but I will try to check in again at the beginning of July. My goal is to pay a couple hundred off of my student loan and my car loan. Things that will likely get in the way of my progress in the coming month: *Stabilizer link needs replacement on my vehicle (yes, the one I owe 11K on) *Home improvement projects (next on the radar is painting the stairwell, then I will move on to redoing a closet!) *Thinking about doing a quick road trip / camping trip in mid-July.. Anyone else making any progress on financial goals? Hope everyone is staying safe and well.

I am glad to see you are making so much headway. Living with debt is stressful, I'm sure.

Thank you!! I normally just ignore it and let it pile up while I am out busy having fun. Hahaha. That needs to change. I am sure debt free will feel fantastic (Until I buy a house, and then will have 200k or whatever extra debt). Lol. Hope all is well with you!!

I quit smoking when I made my math and discovered that it meant a whole holiday air fare included.

@maezee The first month I "smoked" hard candy all day Went up almost 20 pounds. I donĀ“t miss it ar all now even though I smoked for almost 50 years. When I got a lymphoma, the oncologist said that the test showed that I had emphysema.

@marguicha Ahh yes! I have only quit about 4 months and I didn't THINK I was eating more but then looked and had gained like 8 pounds. I bet quitting smoking with the health problems has helped them a little bit, or did the smoking cause them?

You seem to be doing a good job. Many don't realize things can be refinance cars and more and save money!

Heck yeah! And my savings is only 1.25 percent, which isn't that much, but having the loan at my credit union will be much more convenient!

No I am pretty much in the bin as far as finances go. Pretty lucky as I have absolutely 0 debt. I was up financially as I worked 5 months flat with no days off up until march and then got furloughed from my job So with furlough you are paid 80% of your salary but I was hourly paid so got an average which was better than nothing but considering my OT I was waaaaaaay out of pocket. I was the first person in my workplace brought back to full time work but there is an OT ban so now I am actually worse off

I am sorry to hear that! OT is a big money maker here. We work a ton of it, so if we were furloughed, we would definitely be making less money. But some money is better than none, I suppose?
