Nothing like keeping my legion of fan (intentional) happy. Or you can call it paying back a favor. A few days ago I borrowed (read: stole without asking) one of the patented discussion titles from @TheHorse , and I have to compensate him. A couple of days ago I did with the Jesse Winchester song, but there is interest to pay, so here’s another payment. Another obscure artist that perhaps only he and I know performs today’s song without the title in the lyrics.
#7: Crazy Wind - James McMurtry
Yeah, he gets close: “Nothing’s on the TV but something’s in the wind, and it makes you crazy.” Close, but no see-gar.
Now, you’ve heard the family name. James McMurtry is the son of Lonesome Dove and Terms of Endearment author Larry McMurtry. He’s quite an iconic figure in Americana and singer/songwriter circles. But Americana isn’t exactly a mainstream music genre, so....
Let me flash back to 1989, Indianapolis, Indiana, and the opening night of the 1989 BoDeans tour for their album Home. The opening act was James McMurtry. The next night, in Bloomington, Indiana, he opened again. Two days later, I had McMurtry’s debut album.
That’s an impact. And this remains my favorite song of his, a narrative about an abused woman leaving the situation. “Self-preservation, what can you say” is one of my favorite lines out of any song from the 80s.

Another good one. I'd heard it before but hadn't memorized any of the words. I like the line about "daggers in your eyes." I sometimes see the influence of John Prine in his images. If I finally get to see him love (I havn't), I'll ask him if Prine was an influence.
