Tomorrow starts the Midsummer’s Celebrations in Latvia or as on June 23rd it is called Ligo Vakars and the following day Jani or John's Day. These are traditional and usually, on the night celebrations, people light bonfires, have dances, music, and plenty of food and beer. I am glad we do not celebrate here in the US because there are enough painful memories for me already. What we have not gone through these celebrations. Happy and sad times and times with barrels of beer. The tradition is to stay up all night because it is the shortest night of the year but we did not do this too often. I can get Latvia’s Radio 2 over the Internet so probably tomorrow I will listen to some of the music they play for the celebration. I have added a photo of my stepdaughter and her father one Ligo Vakars and you can see how much they loved each other.

How long is your "shortest night"? I looked mine up yesterday and the day here is 14 hours long so the night is not all that short. However, when I lived in Canada, the night was short.

I am not sure but it is known to be the shortest and it doesn't take long to wait out the night in Latvia @petatonicsca

Australia doesn't celebrate the solstice in any way but lots of countries do seem to.

That's wonderful. You are obliged to celebrate to make yourself happy to ward off those painful memories you carry in your life. Good luck and enjoy.
