The engine is damaged because it's too late to change oil

A few days ago, my brother's Honda automatic motorcycle broke down on the trip. The engine could not be started until finally it had to be taken to the nearest motorcycle repair shop. After checking it turns out the engine is damaged due to run out of lubricating oil. As a result, I had to completely disassemble the engine and cost more than $ 100. This all happened only because my brother was late changing the engine oil which cost no more than $ 5. A valuable and expensive experience.

Hondas are near bulletproof I've owned a few
Yes changing oil regularly is important but getting engine damage from not changing the oil isn't common.
If there was NO oil in the engine that'd be more understandable.
My last bike was a suzuki gsxr 750 and I used to change the oil every month
but also had an older cbr 600rr and I left that 2 years with no oil change and it was fine.

I myself was also surprised, because the one who experienced it firsthand was my brother. In my opinion it is indeed impossible that engine oil can run out even if it is not replaced by new oil for a long time. What happened was that my brother left on the motorbike and walked home. He said the engine was damaged due to running out of oil, and until now it is still being repaired and has not been taken in view of the expensive repair costs. Is this a lie? I do not know.

@Babale engine oil can run out if there is a leak somewhere and NO oil will damage an engine quite quickly.
Not changing the oil at regular intervals isn't a good thing but I don't see it killing an engine unless the oil hasn't been changed for a significant time.
As I mentioned, I had a 3 year old cbr 600rr and didn't change the oil for a couple of years and I hammered that bike regularly red lining and 130mph+ daily...it was fine.
You said you took the engine to bits so what was the damage?

@Mike197602 I don't know how severe the engine failure is, because I haven't seen it directly and only heard from my brother's strange story. For automatic motorcycles, there are two types of oil used. One engine oil and one axle oil. Possibly this axle oil is depleted.
