Let us not erase the past, let us change the future.

Good morning, dear friends. Today I woke up thinking about all these protests lately And about all those broken statues. And I thought that maybe that was not the way. People change and customs change. Clothes change (I so wanted to be able to dress as Scarlett O´Hara when I was a child or have those hats that my mother used when she went out). As it was, none of it was in use when I grew up but I could wear jeans and when my feet grew old those wonderful Skechers with memory foam or flip flops during summer. Would I burn my mother´s or grandmother´s clothes? No. But they belong to a museum. We may burn all the traces of slavery in films (like in Gone with the wind). But we will not be better unless we construct from there a better society. We need to change a lot of things. And we are doing it. Only we have to do it with more speed. And that is not done by burning but by educating. NOW I will see what I can eat for breakfast. I think I deserve it. I woke up filled with positive thinkig. See you at my notifications and in your recent posts

Past cannot be erased. But we can create good memories today for a better future.

Heartbreaking to see these statues demolished. Such hatred.

I wish change was done in another way. But there had to be violence to try to stop violence towards women (the Me Too movement for instance). And I cannot understand that people are segregated for their race, beliefs, genre or culture. Why isn´t the law changed before that happens? How much did women have to fight to have the right to vote! How many gays are still killed for their genres? And how many people still secregate other races!

@CarolDM Both sides are violent. When there shouldn´t be "sides".

@marguicha They are breaking the laws here. They should be arrested for felony vandalism. The laws are on the books. The police are being told to stand down by the higher ups. Political craziness.

You're right of course. You can't just forget that slavery ever happened. It would become like the holocaust with some believing it never occurred.

We can better our future. But we cannot do anything to the past. I think it is stupid to take "Gone with the wind" from the list of important movies just because there was a slave. and BTW, that black woman got either a nomination or an Oscar for her rol.

@JudyEv There´s nothing that can be done. But we can all do it better from now on.

@marguicha Before long, they'll be banning half the classics again. I can't see it stopping at slavery. They'll be targeting other groups before long. In Australia, there is a furore over our treatment of the aborigines in the very early days. I read about the nomination of the black servant.

That's right. If we burn our past we start over at ground zero. Moving forward and building on the past is far more productive.

After all, living in the past is impossible.

These things are a part of history and can't be changed. Why not just move forward from the present time instead of trying to destroy everything that remotely reminds us of the past?

There are some things that sound crazy to me. I do not understand why the Cocacola company will stop labeling its bottles. Was there any racial thing in the color (red and white) the letters or the name? Why not just teach children to live together in peace drinking the same disgusting Coke?

@LindaOHio I could not find any offensive thing there either. But then, nowadays, we cannot say any thing. I personally think it is stupid to call black people African American and not call the rest Caucasian American, Nordic American, Chinese American and so on. And I could go on if I invented a word for mixed people. My grandparents came from different parts of the planet and I´m very proud for that.

@marguicha I hadn't heard about Coke. I wonder what was offensive about that? I love my Diet Coke.

Correct, those statues, those monuments serve as a reminder to us all so that we don't repeat the mistakes our forefathers did. Destroying those is counterproductive.

@JohnKu That and they cannot wait more for equality. At least that happens in my country.

@marguicha They are simply overwhelmed with the quarantine and the police brutality, that's why they riot.

I have been saying the same thing for months now about destroying statues and trying to erase the past. No one can erase the past, we have to work to make things better by learning from all the mistakes that were made before us,

Of course! You don´t destroy Columbus by destroying an statue of him. And how far back should we go? Place all the white people in ships and take them to Europe? How many of those white people are of mixed blood? And how many of the black people are white in part? The ex President of the US is as much black as he is white. And I´m happy to have a lot of different ancestors that made me as I am.

I don't understand how destroying statues helps anyone. Lawless seems to be the only real goal I see.

The only thing I understand about that violence is that those people were not "seen" by anyone for too long a time. They don´t belong to any place. So there is only anger left. Nit that I accept it. But more equality should be given to everyone.
