This story takes place in the south of England during the second world war. The main character is a young widow named Em who works at a munitions factory and lives alone. Em has some very good friends and she also has a daughter who has moved away, but despite all this, Em is often lonely. One day, there is a knock on her door and she opens it to see a strange woman standing there. This woman asks to speak to Em because she has reasons to believe that she is Em`s long lost sister. This takes Em by surprise because she never knew that she had a sister. The two women soon become friends but Em`s best friend and her daughter soon become suspicious.
