No relation to Casey Kasem’s American Top 40; rather, it’s the hillbilly’s top ten songs that feature “America” (or “American”) in the title! And I just noticed that a few of these “America” songs aren’t by Americans at all! What gives! Here’s today’s song for you. #9: Breakfast in America - Supertramp Case in point: England’s Supertramp (the name of the band, not a reference to a woman of loose morals with extraordinary powers ). The title song from their mega album (which I gleefully purchased as soon as I got out of boot camp) is a stereotypical look at the U.S. (“they’ve gotta have ‘em in Texas ‘cause everyone’s a millionaire”) from the perspective of someone who’s never been here (“take a jumbo ‘cross the water, I’d like to see America”). That album was huge! I guess Roger Hodgson did like America after all. He went to California and he moved there in 1973 and has lived there ever since.
