{Old Newspapers} 100 Years Today

United States
July 8, 2020 11:48am CST
Taken from Hickory daily record. July 08, 1920 and found on LOC.GOV Two very different headlines. Both that were probably a sensation in those times. Especially the ladies and girls in military uniform. I will never understand how a mother, whether she be directly related or stepmother, could do such a thing. I do wonder what became of the twins she gave birth to. 100 Years Before I was born. I have an ancestor born in 1901 on this day as well. She would have been 19, and while this would not have been her local paper, I wonder if she'd seen this same headline? Or if she could even read for that matter?

@ScribbledAdNauseum I have a book that is a copy of an old Sears Roebuck catalog. It's so cool. And the prices are so interesting.

@LindaOHio Oh! That does sound really cool. I thought it was cool how Sears Roebuck used to sell lumber and blueprints for people to make their own homes! It's hard to imagine that Sears is no more.

@LindaOHio Anything you could ever want. Much like they did in their actual stores.

That's the way I feel too. I'd love to get off a train and be back in a town in the late 1800's. I'd also love to get back on that train and arrive back in modern day.

@ScribbledAdNauseum ahh.... I once have read a very old newspaper about the war at our area.... I asked grandpa about it and he still remembered it. I feel like 'How is it to be there'...

@Adie04 Oh! Those moments are always so nice. Being able to hear about things like that from people who experienced it.

I couldn't read the articles but I wonder if they allowed the murderess to raise her babies .... what did she do anyway, kill her husband for abusing her? Back then it was common to convict women who'd dare to fight back against abuse. I imagine it would have come as a shock to see women dressed like soldiers .... now look how far we've come.

Oh, that's definitely a good reason to charge her @ScribbledAdNauseum Sometimes those images just don't post the way we want

You're right @ScribbledAdNauseum all too often men just walked away leaving a woman to try to raise kids by herself with not even half the means he'd had.

@rebelann I agree. Though the father should have been charged too, if he was in the picture. I don't think that's how it was done back then, though.
