Ring around the rosies

I was checking online the nursery rhyme after several things fell from my hands while I was doing my chores. I cleaned thoroughly the sink but after that my hands were trembling. It is not nice to be old So I came back to my bedroom (so clean and ready for tomorrow´s technician) and started t sing the "ring around the rosies" song. I was shocked to see that it had to do with the Great Plague. OMG! Even in nursery rhymes we are surrounded by infection! Still, I will not surrender. I cleaned the sink! Have you done any special thing today?

As this is a nursery rhyme that is not part of my heritage, I did not know that until now. I did know of the Black Plague written by Boccaccio or paintings of the period that I have seen in museums.

@DianneN I´ll check it now. I know a couple of anti Jewish songs in Spanish that I sung as a little girl until my mother forbid me to sing them (not explaining though).

@marguicha I didn't know it as a little girl when I sand and danced to it, but learned later in life. The same is true for London Bridge.

Well, I would have never known the meaning of those lyrics if you did not write about it today, thanks. "To ashes, to ashes We all fall down Like I said they would gather the sick in a circle then burn them they would turn to ashes and fall down they did it to stop the virus.

For decades I had only thought that "they all fall down" just meant infirmity in my hands as I thought today. And then, when I read about the accurate symptoms of the Black Plague (which, by the way, is the one they have now in Mongolia) it is eerie.

A lot of the nursery rhymes have very nasty connotations once you know about them.

Sorry I am not aware of it too. Rhyme songs have their own story or history to tell.

Many stories were not really meant for children at first.

@Nakitakona Most fairy tales are not nice at all for children. And they never were meant to be in fact.

@marguicha You're right. It's because of its easy tune and rhythmic beat becomes ideal for the kids to sing.

Maybe we could use our own meaning with rhymes like this. I knew it as well unfortunately.
