Fancy or plain?

Japan

When we first started having to make our own face masks/coverings because of the shortage, people in Japan were using any kind of material they could find, and even that sold out fairly quickly. Grandmas and stay-at-home moms who were good with sewing machines started making very professional-looking face coverings for their kin and their neighbors. So suddenly, instead of being a country that uses basically white masks (as it has for years and years), and plain black, grey, and other neutral masks (which only started a couple of years ago), I started seeing individuality in masks. Well, now masks have become easier to find online, and society in general has gone back to white or plain masks. (Black and grey are also popular.) I had started making some of my own, but about as "wild" as I got was very subtle stripes. I made some hot pink ones for my granddaughter. I'm seeing teacher friends online with all kinds of cute patterns on their masks. Aside from being a rather "plain" person myself (I tend to buy clothes that are plain or very subtly patterned only) I have a couple I'd like. One of them is a mask with glowing Hawaiian lava, because I like volcanoes. I'd love to have a Geopark mask with Sakurajima on it, but I'd have to design it myself. Then I thought, "Kids are going to be looking at me. What will be the least likely to be distracting?" Well, the answer, I think, is to do what other adults are doing... white, grey, black. Plain, unpatterned. Kids can then focus on the subject. Oh, but it would be so much fun to have a cat nose and mouth... What about you?

Making one's face mask has brought out the artist in each one of us. There are different free patterns to follo0w specially for those who are not artistic and could it be the reason why cloths are sometimes running low in supply ? There are also ready made ones that anybody could order online but it's quite expensive. If I were artistic, I would like to have like what you are mentioning here, cat nose and mouth :-) So cute. I would also like to have different cute animal mouths and noses. Perhaps if children who are not used to wearing masks might want to and enjoy wearing masks if there are cute images on masks :-)

I'm sure children will have fun with cute images. I know some adults have been having fun with symbols of their jobs (biologists, geologists, music teachers, etc.)

Suddenly there is lot of interest in designing a mask. That may be because it is going to be a must wear item for long time to come.

Also, I think if it is comfortable and also kind of a fashion statement, more people are likely to be persuaded to wear them.

I love colors too, but I want my students to look at what I am teaching and not stare at my mask. So that is a conflict.

I'm afraid I'd be looking for plain masks. I don't really like drawing attention to myself.

We can collect free mask at community centre. Either black or white. Prefer black, fabric because if it is dirty, nobody would notice

That's good you can get free mask! Is it disposable or washable? I actually prefer black or grey because of the same reason you have, but black absorbs the sun and gets hot.

Yeah. Though there are many fancy ones available, I still prefer the plain ones.
