Sooo...What Did I Learn This Trip?

Humorous sign reminding visitors to keep their distance from wildlife. Photo taken by and the property of FourWalls.

That was hardly a “vacation.” More like a “jaunt.” I love taking them, though, whatever you want to call them. Whether it’s an hour or a week, it really feels good to turn off all that nonsense in the news and just enjoy life. I did learn something quite valuable this time around. That’s good. It’s always a bonus when a trip is educational as well as relaxing. Soooo....what did I learn this trip? Bears know how to measure distance. Posted with this discussion is a photo of a sign that was hanging in one of the restrooms in the Smokies. Apparently bears (and deer: there was a similar sign for them) can tell if you’re 49 yards, two feet, and 11 inches from them. And they’ll call a park ranger on you! Seriously, I understand the need for the signs. Those cubs are so dang cute, as are the fawns. But they’re called wildlife for a reason. I love to see wildlife when I’m in the Smokies. (No bears this time, just wild turkeys and elk.) Lots of people enjoy the wildlife as much as the scenery, too. However, some people forget that mama bear isn’t as friendly as Fido. Hence, the need for the sign. And the humor is welcomed: sometimes humor makes the point better than a serious, “don’t do that!” sign does. Until next trip, thanks for coming along with me!

There was a town in Ireland that had a heap of funny signs. Humour certainly gets the point across.

Thanks for posting those. They were quite funny, especially the “dear dog” sign.

I think a funny sign seems to get the point across. I really like bears as they look cute. If you get in their way they can be dangerous. I saw a program about a bear that attacked a man and his adult daughter. I love days out, vacations to different countries. I am trying to decide where to go next. You are sensible visiting America's national parks.

We have a nearby state park that is full of alligators, snakes, wild horses and bison. There is a sign at the entrance that says basically, "This isn't a zoo. They animals here aren't tame, they are wild, and they will kill you if you get too close to them." I mean, that's not what the sign says word for word, but that is basically what it says in a nutshell. Stay away from the wild animals or you could die.

the rise of bunnies moving closer to human houses for safety has changed the patterns of the predators in our area. Foxes, Hawks and others now come and sit in the bushes (foxes) and trees (Hawks) of our neighbor waiting for little bunny fo-fo to oops well join them for breakfast!
