I Have No Clue

These are in the field just below our Church, unfortunately the weeds kind of block the view, so I don’t know how good the picture is. They are purple on the top, and I’m absolutely clueless, as is most of the people I have asked. I thought I’d give it a shot here though. I have to get some more writing in, but I’ll be back to see if anyone knows what the plant is....

They are either a Cardoon or an Artichoke, I believe. Closely related but cardoons have smaller flowers and are a smaller plant, on the whole. Both are related to thistles but have far fewer spines (in the cultivated varieties, at least) and both are edible, though the artichoke head is eaten before the purple flower shows and the tender young shoots of cardoons is what they are grown for. These look as though they've escaped from captivity and, as they are a Mediterranean plant, they'd probably do well in California.

The top looks like a type of thistle. For a really good identification you need to look at the leaves as well. There is a close colored picture at the bottom of this article.
