Chicken of The Woods

Chicken of the Woods is the name given to a mushroom that can be found in the woods of North America. There are a few different variations found here. Each species is yellow / orange in color, but the Laetiporus cincinnatus which can be found on the east coast, may have more red color in it. The Laetiporus conifericola is more often to be found on conifer (cone bearing) trees. You'll find Laetiporus gilbertsonii on Eucalyptus and Oak Trees. These mushrooms are edible, but some may find that it upsets their stomach. Chicken is not the only flavor you may detect from this mushroom. Some say it tastes more like crab or lobster to them. The mushroom also tastes subtly of lemon.

I am not one to forage for wild mushrooms. I prefer to purchase them in my local market. The only ones I really like are button mushrooms and baby portabella mushrooms.

@ScribbledAdNauseum my sister--in-law forages for edibles all year. She is with the forestry service and quite knowledgeable about edibles.

@ElusiveButterfly That is kind of cool. Does she eat them plain or has she made jams and jellies out of anything?

I want to go in a little foraging adventure with a few of my friends sometime. I like pretty much any mushroom, but I usually get the portabella mushrooms

I didn't eat mushrooms for the first seventeen years of my life. They are different, but I like them.

I'm not sure if they grow outside of the US. I imagine they probably are, but perhaps with a different name.

I've never seen it before, so am not sure exactly how often or how much it grows. We also don't sell it in stores here.

If I pick any (which I plan to) I'll be bringing various pictures of it to make sure I have the right one.

Interesting! A chicken flavored mushroom. I don't like how mushrooms taste personally....I don't think this would make it any better either.

I hadn't thought about that, but the texture of the mushroom and then tasting like chicken would be sort of weird. I was a teenager when I first tried mushrooms, and they were weird but good.

I don't know where you live, so was wondering if you had found some. They sound kind of pretty, a pretty color. I don't eat mushrooms, something about the consistency that I just don't like.

Same, wouldnt want to deal with that. Of course, it seems it's a guessing game. Some will have it, but many others will not.
