And so the celebration of our neighbors to the north comes to a close. I started counting down my favorite Canadian musicians in honor of Canada Day, then followed it with this list of favorite songs by Canadians. Since this guy topped the list of favorite musicians, it’s probably no surprise one of his songs sits atop this list. And here it is. #1: If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot See you tomorrow. DANG, what is it about this song? You don’t know how many people I know who list this as one of their all-time favorite songs. I can understand it, because it’s one of my all-time favorite songs. But you generally don’t tend to find such universal agreement about songs that way. Lightfoot wrote this song about his first marriage (he’s been married three times, plus a couple of relationships [hey, he’s 81, it’s not like he’s a 22-year-old with those stats ]) hitting the rocks. It’s amazing how personal pain can bring out the best in an artist’s work. You know, I’m sorry his marriage ended, but wow, what a song he gave us!
