Waking up with a stiff neck

Japan
July 27, 2020 10:09pm CST
I've been going to a physical therapist because of some back problems, which I suspect have been brought about by having to teach online instead of standing in front of a class. They finally got resolved and I was feeling much better. He worked on my left side, which had the most tense muscles. He keeps telling me not to sleep on my left side, which is my preferred side. So after having trouble going to sleep because of the rain and the cat, I finally fell heavily asleep and woke up to the alarm. I was, obediently, sleeping on my right side, but had managed to maneuver my neck off the pillow. So my head was on the pillow, and my neck was unsupported, and boy did it hurt! I still can't turn more than about 45ยบ to the right. My left side, which had caused trouble for so long, is totally fine. Do you have problems like this when you sleep?

Oh, I hate a stiff neck for that would annoy me no end for the whole day. I apply hot compress to ease the pain.

So far it's too hot to do hot compresses, so I am doing small stretches and taking ibuprofin.

@petatonicsca oh, I do not take pain reliever. It can affect the liver or kidneys.

That doesn't sound at all pleasant. I hope it returns to normal soon.

It is now Friday and I went back to the physical therapist. I have been much better for the past couple of days and he could feel that my muscles are more relaxed.

I've had that kind of neck problem before. It can happen if you're having back problems. Warm baths and massage helped a lot. It's good that you've got a therapist. Hope you feel better soon.

The therapist really helps me a lot. I think I will probably go once a month even when I am ok, now that I'm a little older, just to make sure I don't get out of joint. He's covered by national health so it's only about 6 USD (six hundred yen) per visit.

I think he is right. We need to turn from side to side when sleeping.

Nope. Before I slept at right side. Some doctors said that it's not good to sleep in your right side. So I sleep now in my left side.

For digestion your left side is better. I was sleeping on my left side for digestion, but then my left side muscles got sore so I had to switch to my right side.
