Using points to travel

In England we have Avios Points. I booked Miami to Antigua, Antigua to Tobago and Port of Spain to Miami. I used Avios points to book these and also had to pay airport tax. However all our flights were canceled due to the virus. Therefore the airline sent us three vouchers. I also have a little more than 26,000 Avios on the airline website. I am having a challenging time trying to decide where to go using these three vouchers. The airline has other airline partners like American Airlines. I have used two flights using Avios points. We were coming back to England from our trip around the world. The flight price from Los Angeles to London with cash was too expensive so I booked to go to Stockholm and then used Avios to come back to England. Another time I booked a one way flight to mainland Portugal and then booked another one way to Madeira Island. I used Avios points to come back to England. Only short haul flights are worth doing with Avios. Otherwise the airport tax and surcharges are not affordable.

It is a good idea to use points for short haul flights. It will be nice when it becomes possible to travel again. I miss travelling abroad, but this year I am staying in my own country.

It is wonderful to see you again. I have loved hearing about your travels abroad in the past. I think you are being sensible staying in Denmark.

@Porcospino I have only seen the capital city Copenhagen. I am sure Denmark has beaches and countryside where you fancy renting out a room. I am hoping an end to this virus. I can't wait to be able to book another trip.

@maximax8 It is nice to see you too Yes, I have many happy travel memories from the past. I am already thinking about which countries to visit when it becomes possible to travel again. We might visit a Danish island later this year, but I am not sure yet. It is hard to find a place to rent in Denmark because so many other Danes also want to rent a room or a holiday apartment in our own country.

We also have that point system to use during flights. I'm still gaining and saving my points so that I can use it in the future and travel for free

@ Janice I am really pleased that you are saving your points. I have noticed short flights are more affordable with points. I see that you live in the Philippines which has many islands. It is quicker to travel by plane than my ferry I believe.

Yes, I really miss traveling during this pandemic. The situation changes a lot so just because it was on the safe list lots of people went to Spain. British government took it off the safe list. Now they must go into quarantine when they return to England. Portugal is not on the safe list so it is annoyed. Next Friday I will take my son to the wheelchair center. I have looked forward to that for ages. Yet, it is overseas I wish to go at time we have got an appointment.

I know about a lady from Kuwait that traveled to Argentina. She had booked a cruise to Antarctica! Now that would be a very expensive trip. We are talking about over 6000 American Dollars. It was in March 2020. She phoned lots of important people and they all said keep looking at the news. She departed on her trip to Antarctica and found out Internet on board was mega expensive. She spent days on the cruise then paid for a short time to use the mega expensive Internet. She saw that borders were closed and the cruise might not be able to go back to Argentina! The staff let every passenger use the Internet because it was an emergency. The staff suggested they could sail to the Netherlands! On, what was the reply of the passengers. The ship was from there you see. In the end 11 days late it went to Uruguay. She was booked on a plane to the USA where she found out that Kuwait has closed their border! She was stuck in America until Kuwait paid for all those stuck aboard to fly home. They had paid for free accommodation in America while she was waiting.

British Airways have for long haul flights off peak and peak. I have noticed the points needed for peak time make it too challenging. Airport tax seems to vary.

Better not to use any of them and stay home safe. That is the best advice one can give you during this time of pandemic.

I will wait until it is safer to use these three vouchers. Hopefully the pandemic will end and I wonder when that will be,
