Day 4 Promise 449 Matthew 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. 32 And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaks against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. People are quick to accuse people of blasphemy or slander. They even take people to court if the accusation is strong enough. Blasphemy was common in Jesus’ time. The Pharisees constantly accused Him of blasphemy. Jesus told them what true blasphemy was and what God would and would not forgive. He metaphorically drew a line in the sand when He told the Pharisees God forgave most blasphemy. Only one was and is unforgivable—blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. One of the most controversial doctrines in the church pertains to the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Most people don’t understand what it means. As Christians, you are drawn to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord by the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who lives in you and works in your life to teach and guide you in all truth. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is the most important person of the Godhead when it comes to your faith. You hear people talking against Jesus, using His name in vain, mocking Him, and yes, slandering Him. That is not blasphemy. Blasphemy is when you deny the work of the Holy Spirit in bringing you to salvation. It is turning away from your faith and embracing false doctrines and religions. Hebrews 6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. (KJV) The author of Hebrews said it is impossible because they put Jesus to open shame. 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. 2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Blasphemy then is against the Holy Spirit because He does the work in your life, bringing you to Jesus as Savior and Lord, then teaching you through God’s Word and spiritual gifts to understand God’s Word. Let’s pray: Father, help me never to come against You and the work of the Holy Spirit in my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. The unforgivable sin. Thank you for this Valerie. I always believe that when I encountered Jesus, I received the power of the Holy Spirit. My Helper - the Spirit of Truth.
