They Don't Make Things Like They Used To

Monday afternoon, my tablet went kaput. The screen just went black while I was on it. I tried everything I knew to get it to work. I even took the back off which was no easy task. My brother was upset because he had bought it for me for my birthday 4 years ago. I told him things just aren't meant to last anymore, especially electronics. So, I had no choice but to try and find another one. I couldn't find one the quality of the one my brother got me but the one I bought will just have to work. I only use it when I am in the living room anyway. Sometimes I mylot with it. My new tablet is supposed to arrive today. Do you find that things aren't built to last anymore? I remember my grandmother having a chest freezer that she had for many, many years. I don't know how old it was but it looked old, even to me as a child. Yet, that freezer was still working when she passed away 40 years later.

I’m on my third iPad, but I wear them out. We have a 40 year old GE refrigerator freezer in our basement that is still going strong.

I think that's what happened to my tablet, I just wore it out. I use my laptop in the mornings to mylot and then I used my tablet the rest of the day. When I first got it, I played a lot of games on it but not anymore.

That happened to me. I brought it to an electronic repair shop. It was fixed in an instant. There was a wire that got disconnected.

@simone10 yup. I love it. But it seems too slow since many update things needed to do. I think I need a new one soon.

Earlier buckets were made of steel. Now they are made of plastic.

Yes I agree with you fully. The quality they used to manufacture in olden days is no more there. The new items particularly electronics are engineered to last just the warranty period.

@msdivkar Yes, I think so but I would have to save for quite a while to be able to afford an Apple product.

There really is no quality in electronics anymore, except maybe Apple but I can't afford one of those.

We bought our chest freezer around 1978. It is still running. (Knock on wood) New things just aren't made to last. Have a great Wednesday.

Wow, now that is a very long time. It makes me wonder if companies aren't making them to last to eventually get more money or in my case, if electronics just don't last that long.

@simone10 I don't know. We have a Sony and Panasonic TV that have gone I think more than 10 years. They make good products.

Well lets just ask Apple, every year they launch a new phone forcing people to get it and letting them know the previous year's phone isn't brand new anymore!

In the olden days the household items were of very good quality and they never needed repair. Nowadays even an ordinary light bulb didn't last more than a year or two . Most electronics gadgets become outdated after 1 year and you need to buy a new one.

That is very true. These days, you need a repairman to fix even the slightest thing. No longer can you go and buy a part and replace it yourself.

@simone10 yes you are right. Further most electronic items you buy today are mostly use and throw. You can't repair it any longer. You can atmost replace the faulty circuit board which are very expensive and it's better to go for a new device.

I think it is worth investing in an iPad, Apple still seems to make things that last. I have every one of my old iphones and they still work. I am really thinking about getting a Mac for my next laptop.

@BelleStarr The only thing I'm not sure of is how often a new version of the iPhone comes out. It would be very expensive to have to buy a new phone every few years.

I find that with some electronics they are made with a short shelf life. My hubby has a different brand name laptop then I do. My laptop is older, but still is much more stable then his is. I find that if you listen to what others are saying about products it is good research in some cases and can help you make a wise decision when its time to make a purchase.

I think that is what happened to my tablet, a short shelf life. Of course, I did use it a lot every day. My brother bought it through T-Mobile back when they had a special going on. He paid quite a lot for it and that's why he's so upset. Of course, he didn't even think to research it and up until it just quit, I never had any issues at all with it.

I'm sure items are made with built-in obsolescence. They want them to break down after a few years so you have to buy a new one.

Exactly! That's what I think as well. I remember when I got my first computer, I was so naive and thought it would last forever...lol. I was so surprised that there was a better model a year or two after my purchase.
