A Noise in the Night

Last night, I was talking to my best friend. It was sometime after midnight. I suddenly heard a high pitch whistle from somewhere in my house. I kept my phone in my hand and went looking for the source of the noise.
Stumbling around in my nightgown, I checked the fire alarm, the laptop, the landline, and everywhere else.
My heart was racing and I could hardly breathe. There was a strange odor coming from somewhere, but don't know where.
It suddenly stopped, the noise and the odor. I stayed up a couple more hours wondering what I should do.
I would love to hear any suggestions or ideas you have about what happened. I don't have a clue.

My first guess would have been a smoke alarm, but reading the comments below it seems you checked those. It's concerning that not only did you hear the high pitch whistle, but you also smelled an odor. Was it a burning wire odor, or a sulfur odor? Usually with propane or natural gas, manufacturers add a bad odor so that when there is a leak you can smell it; otherwise, the gases are odorless. But even if you did have a propane leak, that may not explain the high pitch whistling noise. Do you have a big propane tank on your property that stores your propane? I'm wondering if it was a pressure vent on the propane tank that released to alleviate pressure buildup inside the propane tank, and maybe that was the whistling noise you heard.

@amitkokiladitya I had to find out what was making the noise but I am glad it stopped. It has not happened again and I am grateful for that.

It wasn't natural gas or something, was it?
