Today’s dual posts of music should make your head swim. I do like to say this for any newcomers: yes, I do love both; and, yes, both are on my iPod. Let’s start with today’s classic that’s 40 years old now.
#9: He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
This is considered by many fans’ polls to be the greatest country song ever. Nope. Not by a long shot. I don’t think this was even ol’ Possum’s best song about the subject (I’d give that nod to 1968’s hit “When the Grass Grows Over Me”).
But you know, polls and pressure and all that other stuff....
But this is a great tune. Grab a beer and cry in it.
Trivia: if you remember Paul McCartney & Wings’ 1974 hit “Junior’s Farm,” the “Junior” is a reference to this song’s co-writer, Curly Putman.
He Stopped Loving Her Today
Written by Bobby Braddock and Curly Putman
Recorded by George Jones
From I Am What I Am, 1980
I didn’t see no tears:
