And just where have I been today?? In my back yard, mostly, and mostly watching my brother build new steps for my back door. Oh, I did a little bit, mainly holding boards while he attached them to the frame, but other than that, it was all his work! I have the best brother in the world! Here’s another song (which my brother probably doesn’t know because it wasn’t top ten material in the US) from 1980 that’s on my list of favorites.
#2: Another Nail in My Heart - Squeeze
Oh, goodie, another use of the great UK band Squeeze. And, with it, another opportunity for me to say that I think Squeeze should have been much, much bigger in the US than they were. Their success was generally relegated to hits like “Black Coffee in Bed,” “Tempted,” and “Hourglass,” while they enjoyed much greater success in their native country.
Strangely, or to me, anyway, the biggest success that Squeeze did have in America generally came from fans of new wave/punk. I find that strange because they pre-date punk, and there’s really not a punk/new wave bone in their collective bodies. This is just fun, bouncy pop-rock with intelligent and humorous lyrics.
You won’t ever hear a break-up song and references to bars like this in any country song, that’s for sure!!
