Would you rather be a big fish in a little pond or a little fish in a big pond?

I don't know why I came up with this one today in particular, but I have played both roles.
When I was a graduate student in psychology at University of California at Santa Barbara, I felt like a little fish in a big pond. There were major researchers all around, smart fellow graduate students were my "colleagues," and I sometiemes felt intimidated. But I learned a lot and did some research that got published in a major journal.
Then I was a college teacher at a tiny college in Iowa. Many of the teachers there had never published in major journals, and I could tell that some were struggling, and were jealous of my teaching ability, as well as my ability to get students involved in research. I was a big fish in a little pond.
Down the road, I held some jobs where there was balance between the size of the fish and the pond, but I admit that I sometiems felt lazy, and that I could challenge myself more. One of my favorite jobs was being a "mentor" for troubled kids in Contra Costa County. Everyone there was "professional," and I felt comfortable discussing therapeutic techniques and other issues with my colleagues. We were equals.
Have you ever felt like a big fish in a small pond? Or the opposite? I think I most enjoy being a (slightly) small fish in a (slightly) big pond. That way, I'm challenged and can grow.

It's exciting to be a little fish in a big pond when I was younger. But now, I am the fish who owns the pond since I work for myself. It works better for me.

@TheHorse Yes, I do. That's why I also do other things than just writing articles. I have some ebooks published from Amazon as well.

@cherriefic Sounds good. I am a good but not great guitar player. That is an area in which I'm still trying to "grow."

I just want to be a fish who is free to move no matter how big my fish bowl is.

I don’t think I ever felt like a fish at all but maybe that’s just me.

@TheHorse I know that feeling well. It happens often to me. More often now. The radio mentioned that people during pandemic tend to be more forgetful probably because we try to keep ourselves busy or something. I didn’t get to catch the whole thing since I was paying attention to the road.

I’d rather be a dog asleep on a comfy bed!

I've mostly been a big fish in a little or medium-sized pond; and it worked out well for me financially...and I was always challenged. Have a wonderful Monday.

Always challenged is good. I suppose that getting my book done is a "challenge." When I teach college, it's a bit of a challenge, as there are always new issues to confront. Playing with kidlings at the preschool is just plain fun.

@TheHorse I'm glad you enjoy your job so much. Are you going to go the traditional route and pitch your book to the publishers or an agent, or are you going to list it as a ebook? I had my children's book on Amazon; but I'm going to pitch it again the traditional way. I'd like to see it in print. Have a good day.

Around here we have small fish in a tiny pond. But they believe they're big fish in a huge pond. So delusional.
