Good morning from this side of planet. It's 11:12 AM here and this is my first morning break. It will go for another 40 minutes. Next online session is at 12 and then a short lunch break of 30 minutes. I am working till 4 today. I am enjoying my glass of fresh sweet lime juice and that's my mid morning snacks for todayThe new food processor that I got a couple of months back has a very convenient citrus juicer It's Onam today. That's a big festival of Kerela and all Malyalis( residents of Kerala who have Malayalam as their mother tongue) celebrate it irrespective of caste and religion. Their king Mahabali( from a mythological story of Kerala) is believed to come to Kerala from heaven on this day. Mahabali was a very popular king who too good care of the state. It is believed that he comes for three days. So all people in the state celebrate the festival for three days and welcome their beloved king with good food, good music, decorations and beautiful dresses. . Boat racing is a popular game that happens in various parts of Kerela to celebrate the occasion. Elephants are decorated with ornaments. But the most peuliar one is the decoration of phukullam ( flower rangoli). It's a beautiful design with flowers made to welcome Mahabali and good fortune. People make it at their entrance and leave it for three days till Mahabali is supposed to stay. Our apartment has a phukullam contest today. Since their is no physical gathering and celebration this year, people came out of this idea We are not from Kerala and we traditionally don't celebrate Onam. But my younger one is enthusiastic about any celebration and contest. . So she wakes up at 5 to do this phukullam at my door. It took her good two hours or more. Glad that she was able to finish it in time and get ready for her online school. The judges have already visited our house and seen it. My husband entertained them as we were busy with online school. They came with masked faces, observed maintaining social distancing. Seems they appreciated it well and liked the dancing girl in the design who is dressed up in a traditional dress of Kerala. The picture is of our phukullam and I must say it's worth the effort of two hours. Fortunately we had enough flower petals and few we borrowed from our neighbors last night to put this design in last moment. Now my daughter wants me to make a special sweet dish from Kerela. I have to call my Malyali friend and find out the recipe in afternoon. So we finally end up celebrating Onam.
