Can you enumerate the twelve apostles?

A bishop was ranting, his fifth grade teacher admonished him for putting Paul the Apostle among the twelve apostles, and when he complained, his teacher asked him where in the Bible is it written Paul was among the twelve called? He couldn't answer. So, he said that the church he visits twice a day has the names of the twelve apostles on the front facade walls. Paul's name was included. To this day, he never knew why the Augustinian Recollects placed Paul as one of the twelve. His teacher added that had he added Mathias, he could have considered it and the would-be bishop could have gotten a perfect score. I admit, I am having trouble with enumerating the twelve, because no matter I take away the traitor, I still count thirteen. Paul not included. But of course, I know now the answer, after an exhausting research. But I'd tell you that for later. You enumerate first. '

As I was born Catholic, yes I can, look at "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci and name each one of them, easy.

@LadyDuck Omigosh. Thank you so so very much. You are right, that is the purpose of art, to let us use our senses and our intellect. I appreciate this tremendously.

I have a bad memory and can't even remember my phone number at times and I have had the same number for many years. This is what St. Matthew recorded. These are the original 12. Matthew 10:2-4 (New International Version) 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. According to Act 1:26, Judas was replaced by Matthias. There are other apostles such as Paul, since apostle means someone who is send forth.

Yes, Matthias completed the new twelve. Thanks you wrote the correct spelling. I was trying to recall how many letter t's I would put because I remember his name being Mathathias. But of course, it is Matthias. As I did ask our fellow mylotter rhuenz, what about Nathaniel?

@kanuck1 Yay. You are a winner. Congratulations. Glad you work on your Bible study. Gosh, if only I had this link before, I had known sooner. I did watch lots of Gospel movies, and in one, I think, I was puzzled because the name was Nathanael (thanks for the spelling, too). I was counting thirteen apostles, not knowing Bartholomew and Nathanael are one and the same. Yay.

@eileenleyva You can check it out but apparently Nathanael is another name for Bartholomew. The apostle John uses his given name Nathanael, whereas Matthew, Mark, and Luke call him Bartholomew.
